I’m excited to share a collection of Ewe names, which have become some of my favorites among Ghanaian names. Not only do they sound beautiful, but they also carry deep and meaningful significance.
The Ewe ethnic group, indigenous to the southern regions of Ghana and Togo in West Africa, is a notable ethnic group in both countries, boasting a population of approximately 3 million in Ghana and 2 million in Togo.
Interestingly, most Ewe names are unisex, with some exceptions that tend to be more commonly associated with either males or females. I’ve included notes on these distinctions below.
Unlocking the meanings of Ewe names can be made easier by understanding the etymology of these names in the Ewe language. Here are some key prefixes and roots:
- E – He (referencing God)
- Mawu – God
- Dela/Xorla – Saviour
- Worla – Creator
Grasping these fundamental components can help you decipher the significance and stories behind many Ewe names.
